How do you improve on a car that’s widely regarding as one of the best driver’s cars on the planet? Well, Porsche claim that never before in the history of the Boxster was a change of generation so comprehensive. And it takes just one look at the new Boxster to see that first hand, as it now looks far more aggressive. In fact, it looks every bit the mini Carrera GT.

This iconic, open-top, two-seater sports car now comes with a completely new lightweight body, and a completely revamped chassis. It retains its mid-engine layout of course, but is now considerably lower in weight. And that’s despite having a longer wheelbase, wider track, and larger wheels – which should undoubtedly result in more grip.

The Boxster was first introduced in 1996, and had clear design cues from one of the most famous Porsche’s in history – the 550 Spyder. While the latest generation offers design elements that are said to be inspired from the Porsche race cars of the 1970’s. The overall profile offers shorter overhangs, a more steeply raked windshield, and more in-your-face elements like larger and more imposing air intakes. You also get a very distinctive tail wing, which gives the car an entirely different look in comparison to its predecessor.

And not just the design and body, but the very heart of the car has been switched with a more spirited unit. Under the shell is a flat-six engine with direct petrol injection, which provides better fuel efficiency courtesy of a thermal management system, start-stop function, and electronic power steering. Now, that could be a risky move for a car that has steering feels as its most revered dynamic characteristic. That apart, the 2.7 litre unit powering the standard Boxster produces 265bhp, which is 10bhp more than its predecessor. While the Boxster S comes with a 3.4 litre engine, capable of producing 315bhp – 5bhp more than the outgoing model. Both models offer a manual six-speed gearbox as standard, and the 7-speed dual-clutch PDK as an option. Another feature that Porsche is offering on the Boxster is the Sport Chrono Package that offers dynamic transmission mounts for the first time, along with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with a mechanical rear axle differential lock, which is also a first for the vehicle.

The interiors have taken inspiration from the latest generation 911, which in turn is modeled on the uber luxurious Panamera. The interiors offer a navigation system that provides a high-resolution, 4.6-inch TFT color screen featuring audio settings and the communication console. The fully electric convertible top opens and closes in about 9 seconds, and can be operated at speeds of up to 50km/h, so you can mess up your hair in perfection as well.

While reserving judgment until we drive it, it certainly appears that the new Boxster has a lot going for it. So, what we felt was the perfect mid-range sports car is now better than perfect. Or maybe the Germans still think it could be better?
